    The option to convert components should not be taken haphazardly. When selecting a company to convert your inventory, it is advisable to investigate the validity of their process by asking a few key questions.

Has the process been tested?
E-Certa is continually testing it's process in collaboration with some of the industry's largest and most trusted corporations. We have licensing for the only known Patented process in the industry and we stay in constant touch with any and all new claims to possible conversion processes.

What kind of support documentation is offered?
E-Certa, Inc. is an A2LA accredited (from 10/2006 - 03/2012) XRF testing facility for the content of Pb in semiconductors by methods ISO3497 & ASTM B568. We offer RoHS Certificates of Compliance and Material Declarations supported by accredited test results.

A2LA is an accrediting body recognized by the National Environmental Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (NELAC) and the Asia Pacific Laboratory Accreditation Cooperation (APLAC).

If necessary, does the facility have the capability to destructively (ICP-MS) test?
We have had our RoHS element removal process verified by independent destructive testing. We can destructively test any components that may cause concern.

Other serious concerns:
In today's global electronics industry some unfortunate circumstances have been used to create counterfeit and substandard product. Increasing numbers of counterfeit parts have been surfacing throughout the world over the past several years. With RoHs in Europe and the rest of the world following suit, it is E-Certa and the general industry's belief that RoHS compliant markings - as well as false claims - will become a newly identified problem facing these newly imposed restrictions to our trading environment. Through these ongoing investigations, we have become aware that some service companies have laid claim to conversion, CAVEAT EMPTOR! BEWARE! These false claims are merely over-coating the component leads with a no-lead solder base. Though this procedure in small quantities may pass XRF inspection, they will absolutely fail destructive testing, which will be the final method used in any litigation claims against faulty product.

    Hazardous-substance restrictions, counterfeit risk, and wrong parts

    "Don't judge a book by its cover" has never been more apt among electronics components as it is now. Electronic components' exterior packages may look alike, but the leads may contain lead when the systems-manufacturer is seeking to comply with lead-free requirements, or the chip inside may be a counterfeit bought more cheaply by a third-party manufacturer, or a tape or bin of parts may just have been accidentally swapped at the dock or assembly line. "De-lidding" is an increasingly popular service to ensure that the parts used are the parts specified; the service includes lift the lid of a component package and using a metallurgical microscope--with software for a camera hook up--to capture images of the die inside the package, to check for authentic identification.

    According to Technology Forecasters Inc. benchmarking studies comprising electronic-product companies and their suppliers, we anticipate that millions of non-compliant components will be stuck without products needing them.

    Likewise, hundreds of electronics companies with products not covered by hazardous-substance restrictions will face non-compliant-component shortages, delays, and increased prices. The Restrictions of Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS) deadline was July 1st, and now the lion's share of electronic and electrical products headed for the European market for sale should have no more than the maximum allowable percentage of six substances: lead, cadmium, mercury, hexavalent chromium, PBB (polybrominated biphenyl), and PBDE (polybrominated diphenyl ether).
